The Ocean Falls turbine room where three of the Pelton turbines and four of the generators can be seen. The generators were direct driven. The turbines were extremely reliable and required very little maintenance. Very infrequent, years apart, it was necessary to repair or rebuild the bearings. The turbine/generators provided most of the electricity required by the mill and the Townsite. If the power failed in the town site, it would nearly always be an electrical failure caused by perhaps by a serious short or a switchgear cut-out. The major reason for building a large pulp and paper mill at Ocean Falls was the availability of inexpensive hydro power. Electricity being inexpensive was for this reason provided free of charge to all houses and apartments in the Townsite. One of the several benefits of living in Ocean Falls. Some of these turbines are still in operation today in 2009.
